Frequently asked questions

What should I do for chest pain while waiting for the ambulance?

Keep the person seated and calm, loosen tight clothing, and do not let them walk or exert. Follow any advice the dispatcher or a doctor gives on the phone. If the person collapses and is not breathing, start hands-only CPR.

What is the difference between ALS and BLS?

BLS covers oxygen and basic monitoring for stable patients. ALS adds cardiac monitoring, a defibrillator, emergency medicines and a paramedic trained in advanced life support.
